My Thoughts - Stuart Fails to Save the Universe: Spoiler: Bert Gets Married (8/20/2026)

Synopsis: Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and friends are transported to a primitive Pasadena, with huts, no technology and a peaceful civilization that shares everything. While Stuart tries to find a piece of red quartz for the machine, Bert (Brian Posehn) falls in love with a native (Zoe Cipres) and Barry (John Ross Bowie) quickly makes his own negative mark on their society.

My Thoughts:

This was the first episode to fly without the cameo safety net. A true test of a spin-off series is if it can survive without the references to the original series and for the most part, I thought this one did pretty well. Not having the cameos gave more time for the main characters to do their thing.

I liked how this episode reversed things a bit. Usually, the gang arrives in a world that is already screwed up in some way. This time, they arrived in what could arguably be a perfect, peaceful world and were the ones responsible for messing it up. I especially liked how it was a combination of Barry's intentional changes and Bert's unintentional change of introducing the concept of monogamy.

That said, I did feel a bit bad for Bert. He finally found love and quickly lost it, though I'm not so certain a marriage to a woman who didn't quite understand the concept of marriage would have lasted.

Since we're on the subject of Bert. This is yet another episode that seemed to be much more centered around him than Stuart. It's starting to feel a bit like how Sheldon (Jim Parsons) became the central character on The Big Bang Theory when Leonard (Johnny Galecki) was supposed to be the star.

Barry's evolved sexuality is intriguing. In addition to the paradise universe being the perfect place for the sex-charged Barry, it revealed he wasn't just into women and that gay marriage in episode four wasn't just a one-off. I am a bit curious if it evolved as a result of their journey or if it was always a Barry trait that was just brought out by it.

Why did the villagers speak English? It was an intriguing mystery the episode doesn't answer, and I wonder if it is a clue to something bigger or was just a reference to other science fiction shows, like Star Trek, where aliens spoke perfect English.

The poop scene seemed a bit unnecessary. It admittedly had a bit of a shock effect but also was more disgusting than funny. It wasn't even as though Stuart needed a message from whomever is helping him to identify the rock inside the device. Bert is a geologist and could have given him the same information.

I hate to say it because I do like Lauren Lapkus, but Denise just seems a bit out of place. Stuart is the hero (supposedly), Bert is the guy who seems to be the one who is involved with most hijinks and Barry is the pseudo-villain. Other than being Stuart's love interest, Denise just doesn't seem to have a consistent role with the group. I wonder if the show would have been better off with different versions of her rather than the same version which, again, isn't even the version from Stuart's real timeline.

In fact, I'd even argue she's holding Stuart back as a character. If she hadn't been traveling with him, for example, he could have been the one about to marry a random primitive villager (or a primitive version of Denise) instead of Bert.

Final Opinion: It's an interesting episode that allowed both Bert and Barry to shine and had a unique twist. It is getting harder to see Stuart as the star of the show with Bert getting the better storylines though.

My Grade: B
