Movie Review: Major Payne (1995)

Image
Synopsis: After once again being passed over for promotion, Major Bensen Winifred Payne is set to be discharged from the United States Marines. His commanding officer finds a way to keep him in the military by assigning him as the commanding officer of a failing JROTC program at a Virginia Preparatory School. Payne's gung-ho ways and lack of social skills immediately threaten the arrangement, along with the cadets in his unit unwilling to accept his methods.  Who's in it? The movie stars Damon Wayans, Karyn Parsons, William Hickey , Orlando Brown and Steven Martini. Review: I had some time before making dinner last night and as I was scrolling through the channels on TV, I came across Major Payne on one of my movie channels. It had been ages since I last saw this military comedy and I decided to give it a try. The movie, as it turns out, isn't as good as I remembered. However, I still didn't hate it. Look, there's a lot about this movie that, at minimum, is date...

Movie Review: Puppet Master (1989)

Synopsis: When their former colleague commits suicide, a group of psychics travel to a hotel to search for the ancient Egyptian scroll, with the ability to bring inanimate objects to life, they believe he had in his possession. While there, they are stalked by a group of killer puppets. Who's in it? The movie stars Paul Le Mat , William Hickey , Irene Miracle , Matt Roe and Mews Small . By yesterday evening, I was ready to change things up a bit with a movie and since this was one of my wife's favorites when she was younger, found it on Peacock. It wasn't as good as we remembered. I think the biggest disappointment for us is it turned out not to be as scary as we thought it was. If anything, it is kind of a dull film. The puppets are quirky rather than frightening, especially with the weaker 1980s special effects, and th...

Movie Review: Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (1990)

Image
Synopsis:  Kidnapped and imprisoned, a paperboy tells three stories of horror in an effort to distract the witch who is planning on serving him up for dinner. Who's In It? The movie stars Debbie Harry , Matthew Lawrence , Christian Slater , Steve Buscemi , Julianne Moore and William Hickey . Review : I came across this film on one of our movie channels a couple nights ago and, since it had been a long time since my wife and I had taken the time to watch it, I ended up recording it for later. We finally finished up the movie last night and, after seeing it again, I have to say it was better than I remembered it. The wraparound story about the kidnapped paperboy (Lawrence) and the child-eating witch (Harry), was a little predictable and, at times, a little dumb. But, the stories the paperboy ends up telling her are what make this movie and are a big reason why the film is enjoyable. My personal favorite was the second one, about the killer cat. That segment en...
