Movie Review: Tombstone (1993)

Image
Synopsis: Wyatt, Morgan and Virgil Earp move to Tombstone, Arizona, seeking to retire from law enforcement and make money at a variety of business ventures. The town, however, is under the control of a gang of outlaws known as "the Cowboys," and when the local marshal is shot, Virgil decides to take his place, putting the brothers and their friend, "Doc" Holliday, at war with the gang. Who's in it? The movie stars Kurt Russell , Val Kilmer , Bill Paxton, Sam Elliott , Michael Rooker , Charlton Heston and Powers Boothe. Review: It was my wife's turn to go to my daughter's play tonight (it would be too expensive if we went to all the shows together) so, while she was there, I decided to re-watch Tombstone for the first time in years. This movie ended up being everything I remembered it being, and I mean that in a good way. This is the best kind of western, the kind that has a protagonist, in this case, Wyatt (Russell) who is more of an anti-hero than a...

Movie Review: Escape from New York (1981)

Image
Synopsis: In the year 1997, while the United States wages war with the Soviet Union and China, the high crime rate in the United States has resulted in Manhattan being walled off and turned into a maximum-security prison. The prisoners are prevented from escaping but otherwise have full control of the city and live by their own rules. After robbing the Federal Reserve, former special forces soldier Snake Plisson is set to become the prison's newest occupant. However, after Air Force One crashes inside the prison walls and the President of the United States is taken hostage, Snake is offered a full pardon in exchange for rescuing the POTUS. If he doesn't do so in 22 hours though, he will be blown apart by micro explosives in his bloodstream. Who's in it? The movie stars Kurt Russell , Ernest Borgnine , Donald Pleasence , Lee Van Cleef and Isaac Hayes . Review: It has been more than a decade since I last watched Escape from New York, long enough for me to only remember bi...

Movie Review: Poseidon (2006)

Image
Synopsis: The luxury liner Poseidon is struck by a rogue wave on New Year's Eve and is capsized. With rescue hours away and the ship filling up with water as it sinks, a group of survivors attempts to escape by working their way upwards toward the ship's engine room. Who's in it? The movie stars Richard Dreyfuss , Kurt Russell , Josh Lucas , Emmy Rossum and Jacinda Barrett . Review: I treated the family to take out from Applebee's yesterday evening and, since my wife and I had a little extra time from not having to make dinner and weren't really in the mood for another Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit rerun, looked for a movie on Netflix. We had both seen this movie before (on more than one occasion) but also weren't finding much else that looked overly appealing and, ultimately, decided to watch it again. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of remakes and, if I had to compare the two, I still think 1972's The Poseidon Adventure is bett...

Their plan works and, in an attempt to get additional footage, Kate and Teddy wind up stowing away on Santa's sleigh and, in doing so, ultimately cause Santa to crash in Chicago.
