Movie Review: WarGames (1983)

Image
Synopsis: A brilliant but underachieving teenager attempts to use his home computer to hack a software company and steal their new games. Instead, he accidentally hacks a defense computer that is in charge of all the United States’ nuclear weapons and triggers a simulation that has the potential to cause World War III. Who's in it? The movie stars Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman , John Wood, Ally Sheedy, Barry Corbin and Dennis Lipscomb. Review: I wasn't sure what movie I wanted to watch this morning, so to be safe, I decided to go with something familiar. That ended up being one of my all-time favorites, WarGames . Even though I've seen this film many times, it still manages to be entertaining. The thing I really like about this movie is it is really two stories. The first, and obvious, one is about the dangers of computers in the wrong hands, something that is even a bit more relevant today with so much being done online and the increase in hackers. In this particul...

Synopsis: Michael and Rae are vacationing in the Southwest when she learns he used their $15,000 new house money to buy a classic car instead. Angry, she breaks up with him and hitches a ride to the Las Vegas airport. Michael wants to follow her and make things right. However, his attempt to reconcile is delayed when his car is stolen and a botched convenience store robbery results in him being taken hostage. Who's in it? The movie stars Jamie Foxx , Nia Long , Barry Corbin , Eduardo Yanez and Jake Busey . Review: My wife and I decided to celebrate Independence Day with my parents yesterday evening and, after using their grill to make brats and burgers, I wound up in the living room with my dad. He had this movie on and, while I wasn't sure I would like it at first, I have to admit it was a better film than I was expecting it to be. I think the thing that really impressed me about this movie was it didn't rely solely on Foxx to make the film interesting. There ...

M*A*S*H Episode Review: "Your Retention Please"

Image
Synopsis: When an Army retention officer ( Barry Corbin ) visits the 4077th in an effort to get people to re-enlist, he is predictably given the cold shoulder by the majority of the camp. However, a drunk Klinger ( Jamie Farr ), distraught over a letter he received from his ex-wife, is persuaded to re-up and seems determined to follow through despite Hawkeye's ( Alan Alda ) objections. Review: I ended up watching this re-run from 1981 a couple days ago, while taking a break after mowing the lawn. It's an episode I had seen a couple times before but didn't remember much about it. After seeing it again, I ended up having some mixed feelings about it. The premise of the episode is actually a good one. Of all the main characters on the show, Klinger would be the last one you would expect to want to re-enlist so the fact the retention officer was able to take advantage of his depressed state of mind was an interesting twist. This is doubly true when Klinger sobers up an...
