Movie Review: Renfield (2023)

Image
Synopsis: After decades of serving as Dracula's familiar and committing murders on his master's behalf, Renfield seeks to separate himself from his codependent relationship. However, Dracula isn't ready to let him go and, when he helps a local police officer, Renfield becomes the target of a New Orleans crime family. Who's in it? The movie stars Nicholas Hoult , Nicolas Cage , Awkwafina , Ben Schwartz and  Shohreh Aghdashloo. Review: I was intrigued when I saw trailers for this movie a few months ago but, since not all Nicolas Cage movies are the same, I wasn't interested in seeing it at the theater. It became available on Peacock this week, however, and I wasted no time watching it finally. Overall, it wasn't too bad. I wasn't really sure if I would like this movie at first. The premise was somewhat unique, focusing on an underrated character from the Dracula lore and introducing the main plot with a clever recreation of the 1931 film (substituting Cage...

Movie Review: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)

Image
Synopsis: Actor Nicolas Cage is facing financial hardship, is in the middle of a divorce and is struggling to connect with his teenage daughter. After getting turned down for a coveted movie role, he reluctantly accepts $1 million to attend a superfan's birthday party on the island nation of Majorca only to have the CIA enlist his help because his host, Javi, is a suspected arms dealer who may have kidnapped a politician's daughter. Who's in it? The movie stars Nicolas Cage , Pedro Pascal , Tiffany Haddish , Sharon Horgan and Lily Mo Sheen. Review: Since my wife is a big Nick Cage fan, I added this movie to our library when it first became available. However, both of us were a bit undecided about it and ultimately didn't get around to watching it until this evening. After seeing it, I have to admit it was a lot better than I was expecting. I've been trying to think of a good way to describe this movie but have finally admitted to myself I just don't know how ...

Movie Review: The Frozen Ground (2013)

Image
Synopsis: When 17-year-old prostitute Cindy Paulson accuses a prominent baker and family man, Robert Hansen, of kidnapping and raping her, the local authorities don't believe her story, especially when he provides a solid alibi. However, after meeting with her, Alaska State Trooper Jack Halcombe believes she escaped the clutches of a serial killer and pursues her lead. However, a reluctant district attorney and his key witness' lack of stability threaten to shut him down. Who's in it? The movie stars Nicolas Cage , Vanessa Hudgens , John Cusack , 50 Cent and Kurt Fuller . Review: My wife found this movie at the library a couple days ago and, while it sounded like something she would enjoy more than me, I did decide to watch it with her last night. Overall, I have to say I thought it was a good movie. Since this was based on a true story, there was some risk of the movie being a bit too predictable, especially since there was no mystery about who the killer was. Fortunat...

Movie Review: Pay the Ghost (2015)

Image
Synopsis: After failing to follow through on a promise to carve a pumpkin with his son, Charlie, college professor Mike Lawford takes the 7-year-old to a Halloween carnival in an attempt to make it up to him, only to have Charlie disappear while Mike is buying an ice cream cone. Nearly a year later, Mike and his estranged wife, Kristen, begin hearing and seeing Charlie and Mike realizes his son's abduction is one of many that might have been carried out by the vengeful spirit of a Celtic woman who, along with her children, was burned alive for being a witch. Who's in it? The movie stars Nicolas Cage , Sarah Wayne Callies , Jack Fulton , Veronica Ferres and Lauren Beatty. Review: This was one of a few movies my wife picked out while at the library a couple days ago. We ended up watching it yesterday evening and, while I did have some doubts about it, I ended up enjoying it a lot more than expected. I think the thing I liked best about this film was the overall mystery surroun...

Movie Review: Mom and Dad (2017)

Synopsis : A rebellious teenager, Carly, must protect her brother and herself from their parents when a mysterious hysteria causes people to kill their children. Who's in it? The movie stars Nicolas Cage , Selma Blair , Anne Winters , Zackary Arthur and Robert T. Cunningham. Review: I added this film to our streaming library a few weeks ago but, while I was interested in watching it, usually found something else I wanted to watch more. My wife and I finally decided to put it on last night and, while it wasn't quite as good as I was hoping it would be, it was still an interesting film. As I told my wife while watching the movie, I felt as though it was written by someone who really hated kids, especially teenagers, based mostly on the way the kids were portrayed. Basically, if they were a teenager, they were an ass. If they weren't a teenager, like her brother (Arthur), they didn't seem overly bright. In fact, I'm still a bit confused why her brother wasn't in...
