Movie Review: The Woman in the Yard (2025)
Synopsis: Still recovering from a car accident that killed her husband, Ramona is struggling to take care of her two children, Taylor and Annie. One morning, they discover a woman dressed all in black sitting on their front lawn who speaks cryptically and menacingly. As the woman stays in the yard, it begins to put stress on Ramona's relationship with her kids with both her and Taylor experiencing disturbing visions of what is to come.
Who's in it? The movie stars Danielle Deadwyler, Okwui Okpokwasili, Peyton Jackson, Estella Kahiha and Russell Hornsby.
Review: My wife and I have had The Woman in the Yard on our watch list ever since we first saw the trailer for it and, after deciding to watch a movie this evening, decided to finally see it. Unfortunately, the film proved to be a disappointment.
The movie's premise had some promise. The idea of a stranger appearing in your yard, dressed completely in black and hinting at impending tragedy is something that has the potential to be ultra-creepy, especially when that stranger also has the power to manipulate shadows to her advantage.
Sadly though, this movie just never fully capitalizes on it. My wife was able to correctly guess at the woman's (Okpokwasili) identity maybe three or four minutes after she first appeared and, as the film revealed the details that supported her theory, the mystery faded as did the suspense.
The film's slow pace also didn't help matters because it just made the movie kind of dull, especially since most of the sitting around and waiting was the result of Ramona (Deadwyler) choosing to keep her kids indoors rather than taking Taylor's (Jackson) suggestion and at least letting the kids attempt to make a run for it.
The ending, as we thought it would be, wound up being predictable and also kind of dumb. I wondered if the writers originally planned on ending the movie differently but changed their mind at the last second and decided not to go as dark. If not, then I'm not really sure what they were trying to accomplish.
Final Opinion: We waited to watch this movie and, after seeing it, I wish we would have waited longer or just decided not to watch it at all.
My Grade: F
