Synopsis: After failing to be accepted to the Los Angeles Police Academy, TSA agent Ethan Kopek's life has fallen into a rut, and he seems to lack ambition even after finding out he's going to be a father. After his pregnant girlfriend, Nora, points this out to him, he attempts to take some initiative and seek a promotion. He is shot down at first but then given a trial run at a baggage-scanning lane during the busy travel rush on Christmas Eve at Los Angeles International Airport. A short time into his shift, a terrorist makes contact with Ethan via an earbud and tells the agent he needs to allow a carry-on bag containing a chemical bomb through his lane or Nora will be killed.
Review: After scrolling through quite a few holiday movies last night, I decided to change things up a bit and go with the action/drama, Carry-on, which I found on Netflix. At first, I wasn't sure if it would prove to be a mistake but after seeing it, I do have to say I enjoyed watching it.
The thing that really stood out for me was the impossible situation the hero, Ethan (Egerton) was put into. Even though he hadn't been expected at the scanner, the Traveler (Bateman) and his team were organized well enough to overcome the last-second substitution and stay one step ahead of Ethan whenever he attempted to call the police, text a supervisor, etc. Plus, the Traveler wasn't making empty threats, he really did have a sniper watching Nora (Carson) at all times and demonstrated his ability to kill someone simply by bumping into them in a crowd.
In turn, since Ethan wasn't someone who was content with just letting things go as planned and killing more than 200 airplane passengers in the process, it was entertaining watching him as he tried to gain the upper hand only to find himself back in square one or needing to sacrifice a friend's career to ensure he remained at his spot and wasn't reassigned.
The fight scenes between Ethan, the Traveler and others were also entertaining, though maybe a bit over the top. This was especially true of the fight inside the baggage area, with Ethan trying to stay alive while also trying to keep track of the bomb.
The one negative from the movie is it did make me think twice about flying. I'm not a big fan of airplanes to begin with and seeing just how easy it was for the Traveler to get a bomb on a plane didn't help with that. Yes, I understand it's a movie and I'm sure they took some liberties with airport security to make the plot happen. Yet, a lot of it also seemed just plausible enough for this film to potentially give people ideas so, at minimum, I'll probably avoid crowded airports during holiday rushes.
Final Opinion: I want to believe the Los Angeles International Airport has slightly better security than demonstrated in this movie but that aside, I thought it was an entertaining action film/thriller and would recommend it.
When my wife and I decided on pizza for dinner last night, I stopped at Kwik Trip with the intention of just buying a cheap, frozen, cheese pizza for our daughters since we already had another pizza in our freezer. However, as I was walking up to the checkout counter, this particular pizza caught my eye and, even though I wasn't crazy about spending $8.99 when I already had another option at home, I was intrigued enough to make the purchase anyway. We ended up making the pizza in the oven when I got home. After trying it, I have to say it is one of my favorites. One of the things, in particular, that really stood out for me when it came to this pizza was the toppings. The combination of sausage and cheese curds was both unique and delicious, especially since the curds were fresh enough to still squeak when we were eating them. The pizza also proved to be surprisingly filling, both because of the thicker crust and the generous amounts of toppings and cheese. Normally, when ...
Synopsis: Elodie, the oldest daughter of Lord Bayford, reluctantly agrees to an arranged marriage with Prince Henry in the far-off land of Aurea because her bride price will provide much-needed relief to the starving residents of her homeland. When they arrive for her wedding, Elodie quickly warms up to the idea after seeing Aurea's beauty and even falling in love with Henry. However, soon after the wedding, she discovers it has all been a farce and she instead is thrown into a cave as a peace offering for the dragon living inside. Who's in it? The movie stars Millie Bobby Brown , Ray Winstone , Angela Bassett , Robin Wright and Nick Robinson Review: My wife and I decided to watch a movie late yesterday evening and after striking out on horror films lately, ended up changing things up a bit with the fantasy adventure, Damsel . My wife thought it looked good from the trailer and I enjoyed Millie Bobby Brown in the Enola Holmes movies, so we had cau...
Synopsis: A team of criminals is hired to abduct Abigail, the young daughter of an unknown wealthy man with the promise of being paid a percentage of the $50 million in ransom money. They hold Abigail in a remote mansion with the expectation of it being a simple 24-hour job. Instead, they soon learn the mansion is an elaborate and unescapable trap and their hostage is really a centuries-old vampire. Who's in it? The movie stars Melissa Barrera , Kathryn Newton , Alisha Weir , Dan Stevens and William Catlett. Review: I came across Abigail on Peacock a few days ago and, while I was concerned the trailer gave away too much of the movie for me to be surprised by it, I gave it a chance last night. It turned out to be a great choice. I'll start out by saying that group of criminals had to be some of the dumbest people I've ever seen in a horror movie. Not only were there red flags to begin with, starting with the whole "hand over your cell phones" thing, they still ...
