The Andy Griffith Show - Where are Andy's Relatives?

I needed a bit of background noise while working on something in my office today, so I booted up my spare laptop and, because it was readily available, put on the very first episode of The Andy Griffith Show, "The New Housekeeper."

As I watched this episode, which introduced Andy (Andy Griffith), his son Opie (Ron Howard) and Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), something hit me - Andy grew up in Mayberry (evidence of which is provided in later episodes). So why does he seem to have zero relatives who live there?

OK, so obviously, there is Bee. However, based on the first episode, she didn't live in Mayberry prior to the start of the series and instead relocated there to help Andy out. She was also his first choice, despite the distance, after his housekeeper got married, presumably because he had no other family around who were willing to help.

The only other potential relative is Barney (Don Knotts), who is described as his cousin in early episodes. By the time we reach later episodes though, that narrative seems to change, with Barney just being a long-time friend and not a blood relative. So, for the sake of this, I am going to say he isn't.

If Andy were older, the idea of him outliving all his Mayberry relatives would be a likely explanation. He was, at the time of the series only in his 30s though. While his parents were likely dead (resulting in Bee raising him), every uncle, cousin, etc. also being dead just isn't realistic. Neither is every single relative, especially the older ones, moving away.

You don't even hear his relatives being mentioned in the past tense. "I used to work with your dad." "Your mom always threw great parties." "How's your uncle's gout doing?" It's like they've completely been erased.

I did give this some thought and realized it is very possible his family isn't originally from Mayberry and he only lived there because his parents moved there when he was a kid. However, I then also remembered something equally as important - it's not just the Taylor bloodline that seems to be missing.

Andy was married, presumably to a woman he met in Mayberry, or at least in one of the nearby communities. Yet, throughout the series, we never meet any of his in-laws. He doesn't casually bump into them, which is unlikely in a town that small. Plus, to my knowledge (maybe I missed an episode), none of them ever come to visit.

No wonder Opie was so attached to Rose (Mary Treen) in that first episode. Even Aunt Bee wanted nothing to do with him until he was six and she was getting free room and board as part of the deal. Outside of his dad, that paid help might have been the only family he ever knew.
