Movie Review: Turbulence (2025)
Synopsis: After one of his laid-off employees kills himself in front of him, Zach goes to a bar to settle his nerves and ends up buying a drink for a woman there, Julia. A couple days later, he goes on a belated honeymoon with his wife, Emmy, in Italy that includes a hot air balloon ride over the Dolomites. To his surprise, Julia, who has been texting him blackmail messages, shows up as a third passenger. When Zach doesn't cave to her threats, Julia snaps and causes havoc that results in damage to the balloon and the death of the pilot. Meanwhile, Emmy begins growing suspicious of Zach when he tells her Julia is lying.
Who's in it? The movie stars Hera Hilmar, Jeremy Irvine, Olga Kurylenko, Kelsey Grammar and Alessandro De Cominato.
Review: I added Turbulence to my library a few days ago because, as someone who doesn't like heights, I figured it would be a good thriller just based on that. My wife and I watched it last night and it turned out the way-above-the ground setting wasn't the only thing this film had going for it.
It wasn't too difficult to figure out the mysterious Julia's (Kurylenko) backstory and why she targeted Zach (Irvine) but, despite that, there was still a great deal surrounding their relationship that is uncertain, including if he slept with her as she claimed or if he was as loyal to Emmy (Hilmar) as he said he was. This made Julia even more unpredictable, especially when she became increasingly unstable.
For a while, I even wondered if the pilot, Harry (Grammar) was one of Julia's accomplices because it seemed as though he knew her. This, of course, proves not to be the case (in a very graphic way) but a lot of the movie does happen because he did seem a bit incompetent at his job, especially when he let the balloon get way too high.
The survival story that happens as a result of all of this was something that did have us on the edge of our seats, especially the way Emmy was forced to put her life at serious risk multiple times. As the tension between her and Zach grew as a result of everything that happened and some of his real colors being revealed, I also wondered just how the movie would end for their relationship and if she would find her life in danger from her husband.
Final Opinion: The movie isn't perfect, especially since I think they could have just as easily landed the balloon on the mountains and waited for help to arrive (or at least made some of the repairs) than float around randomly. However, it is an interesting thriller with a few exciting twists and was fun to watch.
My Grade: B
