Movie Review: Scream 7 (2026)
Synopsis: Married with three kids, Sidney is trying to live a quiet life despite being a celebrity from the various attempts on her life. However, a new Ghostface soon begins to terrorize both her and her teenage daughter, Tatum. This time, there's a new twist, he claims to be Stu Macher, one of the original Ghostface killers who everyone believes is dead.
Who's in it? The movie stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Isabel May, Joel McHale, Anna Camp and Matthew Lillard.
Review: I meant to see Scream 7 when it came out in theaters. However, things came up, I couldn't make it happen and instead had to wait until it both became available to stream and I had an evening when I could watch it.
The stars finally aligned this evening and after seeing it, I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than expected.
There were a couple things I really liked about this movie. The first is how the action starts almost from the beginning and the new Ghostface doesn't stop coming. Between that and numerous surprise deaths, it kept the suspense building.
The mystery behind the new Ghostface was one of the better ones from this franchise. Stu Macher seemed a bit too obvious at first but as the movie progressed, I honestly didn't know if he would turn out to be alive or if it was just a very convincing deep fake/red herring. And since there is always more than one Ghostface, there was still the question about who was the accomplice.
This became even more complex when the bodies dropped and some of my favorite suspects were among them. In fact, there were times when I thought for sure someone was faking their death only for Ghostface to do a double tap and prove me wrong.
I loved the mother/daughter dynamic between Sidney (Campbell) and Tatum (May). It was interesting seeing the parallels between the two of them, especially when it came to Tatum's super-suspicious boyfriend, Ben (Sam Rechner), and I appreciated the movie making that the focus, even if it meant Gail Weathers (Cox) was in more of a supporting role.
Sadly, while I liked the overall movie, I thought the ending was a bit of a disappointment. Half the fun of these movies is guessing the killer(s). I felt like this one cheated a bit by having a somewhat weak motive (though I did still correctly guess who was behind it). Frankly, I would much rather have had it be an obvious killer than that.
Plus, while I liked the focus on Sidney and her daughter, Gail's absence during the final fight was noticeable. After a while, I even began to wonder if she would end up being one of the killers because, while unlikely, it would explain why she wasn't showing up to help (and would have been a majorly unexpected twist).
Final Opinion: The original is still by far the best. This seventh installment in the series is still entertaining, and, despite the disappointing ending, I am glad I finally got around to watching it.
My Grade: B+
