Movie Review: Nobody 2 (2025)
Synopsis: Forced to commit acts of violence to repay the millions he owes the Russian mob, Hutch Mansell decides he needs a break and goes on vacation with his family to Plummerville, Wisconsin, a tourist trap he visited as a kid, resulting in one of his few happy memories. However, an altercation at an arcade on his first night there quickly escalates, putting Hutch at odds with the local police and then the crime boss they work for.
Who's in it? The movie stars Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, John Ortiz, Sharon Stone and Colin Hanks.
Review: My wife and I watched Nobody a few days ago and enjoyed it enough to want to see the sequel. So, with nothing better to do yesterday evening, thanks mostly to the ungodly heat and humidity outside, we settled down on the couch and watched Nobody 2. After seeing it, I think I liked the original a bit more but also think this is one of the few sequels that manages to recapture at least some of the magic.
I think the thing I liked most about this film is it managed to give the characters a bit more depth. For Hutch (Odenkirk), it was easier to see the inner battle he was constantly fighting against a violent nature that could be turned on with the slightest provocation. The movie also gave us a bit more insight into his life as a child, which included his happiest memory turning out to be a lie, and his relationship with Becca (Nielsen), including some clarification about how much she knew about his violent past before marrying him.
In fact, the movie does a great job finally giving Becca a bit more personality and making her a more likeable character as a result. I absolutely loved how the writers decided to turn her into a wife who worried about her husband and children but also had her own switch that made her a protective mama bear when it came to the kids and a woman who stood by her man no matter what. Of course, now I kind of want to see some sort of prequel movie about her since there were some things in this movie that made me think she might be hiding something too.
As far as the plot was concerned, it was solid. The way things quickly spiraled out of control for Hutch was humorous but also logical - he snaps when his son gets in a fight defending his sister and one of the employees smacks his daughter on the head. The altercation results in him injuring the sheriff's son and since the sheriff (Hanks) is on the payroll of the local crime boss, Lendina (Stone), she eventually gets involved as well.
Much like in the first film, Hutch is greatly outnumbered, even with help from his dad (Lloyd) and brother (RZA) and has to even the odds by creating a death trap. The only difference is the last movie had him do that in a factory. This movie had him convert a waterpark, which proved to be equally as fun and probably a bit bloodier than the first film.
Final Opinion: I have nothing bad to say about this film. It was a fun sequel and entertaining movie we both enjoyed watching.
My Grade: A
