Movie Review: Psych:9 (2010)

Synopsis: Rosyln takes a nightshift job cleaning up files at a recently closed hospital at the same time a serial killer known as the Nighthawk is attacking women. Roslyn's growing anxiety causes her to suspect her husband, Cole, a suspicion she discusses with Dr. Irvin Clement, the psychiatrist organizing the files in the hospital psych wing. During the course of her conversations with Dr. Clement, Rosyln is forced to face her mental health struggles caused by a traumatic childhood, causing her to grow even more unstable and unable to distinguish between what is real and what is in her head.

Who's in it? The movie stars Sara Foster, Cary Elwes, Michael Biehn, Colleen Camp and Gabriel Mann.

Review: After my wife and I took our daughter prom dress shopping this morning, I found I just didn't have the energy to do much else once we got home and, as I started to doze on the couch, my wife found Psych:9 on one of our movie channels. We ended up watching it and, even after some reflection, I am still wondering what the heck it we watched.

I think the movie's premise was an interesting one. Rosyln (Foster) had some serious issues that only continued to get worse as the movie progressed. This made it difficult to tell what was real, what was just her imagination and what might be the result of someone gaslighting her - including Dr. Clement (Elwes), who seemed just a little too interested in learning more about her.

The problem with the movie was it just didn't seem to know what it was trying to accomplish. The Nighthawk murders seemed important, but I still don't know if they were even related to what was happening to Roslyn or just a background thing. Her suspicions about her husband (Mann) led to nothing, as did her interactions with Det. Marling (Biehn), the guy investigating the murders.

Then, toward the end, there was a lot of confusion about whether Rosyln was experiencing a violent mental breakdown or if this was a ghost story - something that ultimately was never answered because the movie just ended without anyone even bothering to ask why there were dead bodies inside the hospital or recap how Rosyln just walks away without anyone suspecting her of wrongdoing - basically a lot of unanswered questions that should either have been answered or not been questions in the first place.

Final Opinion: Again, it was an intriguing plot. However, the movie really needed to pick a lane between being a psychological thriller or a supernatural thriller because in the confusion there really isn't a whole lot thrilling about it at all.

My Grade: D
