Movie Review: Innocence (2013)

Synopsis: After her mom is killed in a tragic surfing accident, Beckett and her father (a famous author) move to Manhattan so she can attend a prestigious prep school. However, when a student commits suicide and Beckett learns it wasn’t the first time, she becomes suspicious. After some investigation, she discovers the school’s faculty members aren’t what they seem.

Who's in it? The movie stars Sophie Curtis, Kelly Reilly, Graham Phillips, Sarah Sutherland and Stephanie March.

Review: The outdoor chores I had planned for this weekend were put on hold because of rain. Since the rest of the family went out to do their own thing, leaving me in a quiet house, I ended up re-watching Innocence because I couldn't remember a whole lot about it.

Now I remember - it isn't a very good movie.

There are a couple major problems with this film. The first is it takes an eternity for something to happen in it. Sure, we see her mom die (well, actually, she just disappears) and her classmate jump off the roof. Other than that, however, the majority of the film is just Beckett (Curtis) going to school, hanging out with her friends and getting her belly button pierced.

By the time she actually started to investigate the school, the movie was more than half over and I was getting pretty bored.

The other issue I had with this movie is we never really learn the truth about the faculty members and what they are. My first thought was they were vampires because there were plenty of things about this movie that supported that theory, such as needing virgin blood to stay young and the ability to convert someone by having that person drink their blood. However, last I checked, vampires couldn’t be out in daylight, and the sun didn’t seem to affect them.

The only other logical conclusion is they were demons. Even that theory was somewhat weakened by the fact they had kids. If they weren’t human, then wouldn’t their kids also be non-humans? Those plot holes, combined with this movie taking forever to get to the main plot kept it from being anywhere near as enjoyable as I hoped it would be.

Final Opinion: The premise of this movie isn’t a terrible one. However, poor execution resulted in the film being a dull and confusing mess with plenty of things that were either left unexplained or were briefly and vaguely explained while I was struggling to stay awake. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, do yourself a favor and avoid it.

My Grade: F
