Movie Review: Stitches (2012)

Synopsis: Six years after a performance at a child's birthday party leaves him tormented by the kids and ultimately dead, Stitches the Clown returns from the grave to seek his revenge.

Who's in it? The movie stars Ross Noble, Tommy Knight, Roisin Barrons, Gemma-Leah Devereux and Tommy Cullen.

Review: I'm not exactly sure what compelled me to watch the movie Stitches this morning. While I'm not opposed to watching a movie that features an undead killer clown, I'm always more than a little skeptical because films like that almost always end up being silly rather than scary. However, it was readily available, and I didn't want to spend a lot of time choosing an alternative, so I gave it a shot.

In the end, it was better than I was expecting but also nothing I'd consider anywhere close to being a great film.

As I had suspected and mentioned, the movie did end up falling more into the silly category than scary. There was plenty of blood and gore but some of the stuff Stitches the Clown (Noble) did were a bit goofy, such as using his red clown nose to sniff out victims.

That said, the film did have some decent surprises that I did find I liked. For one, I loved how Stitches used killing methods that were both varied and geared toward a specific revenge on each victim that was tied to how they treated him at the party. This kept the movie from becoming too predictable solely because you never knew what he was planning for his next attack.

The part about the clown fraternity and one of the kids, Tom (Knight) accidentally walking in on a solemn clown ceremony was also intriguing. It added something extra to the film that kept the mood dark, even as some of the silliness started to take over.

My opinion about the end was a bit mixed. It was unique and a bit unpredictable while also tying into the clown ceremony part but also seemed a bit complex. It was probably because I was still waking up, but it did take a few minutes for me to understand the ending fully as a result.

Final Opinion: It's not really that scary of a film and some of the blood and gore is a bit excessive. However, while there are some parts that are a little on the goofy side, it manages to be an OK, albeit not necessarily memorable, movie.

My Grade: B-
