My Thoughts - Season 1 of The Traitors
As I've said before, I rarely watch a television series until I know it is going to last more than a season. Life it too short to get invested in something that is going to get cancelled. As a result of that, we had not watched The Traitors until very recently, when we finally got caught up on all the past seasons of Project Runway.
I haven't quite finished the first season of the reality series, which features a group of contestants staying in a Scottish manor and competing to earn money while trying to figure out which three are "murdering" a contestant per night. So, please, no spoilers. However, I do have some thoughts to share:
The contestants sometimes take this a bit too seriously. I'm not talking about being overly competitive. This is, after all, a game with money at stake. I do think they sometimes forget it is a game though, whether it is guilt over "murdering" a contestant, almost to the point you would think they actually died, or getting offended at another contestant trying to win. It makes me wonder if some (most) of that drama is scripted for the camera.
Kate Chastain not being a traitor was an injustice. Accused of being one almost from the start and yet somehow managing to survive much longer than she probably should have, it was a shame she was a Faithful rather than a Traitor because it would have been a nice twist.
Christian de la Torre, on the other hand, was a Traitor that should have been outed in the first episode. As my wife pointed out, the man had no poker face. How he managed to make it through almost the full season before anyone even casually suspected him is a mystery to me.
Of course, it wasn't as though the Faithful had even the faintest strategy. It was much more Salem Witch Trial than Agatha Christie at that round table with the finger pointing being based on personal disagreements and conjecture instead of evidence.
That said, I was equally impressed with how easily people were ruled out. If I had a dollar for every time "I know (insert name here) is a Faithful" was uttered, I'd probably have enough money to at least buy dinner, and it was with as little evidence to support the conclusion as the accusations were.
Overall, I think it is a good show, but I would make one change. I think I would have like this better had the Traitors not been revealed to the audience ahead of time and we were left with the opportunity to work out which three contestants were chosen for that role.
Final Opinion: I wasn't sure if I'd like this show but so far, so good. I can't wait to see how this season ends and will probably watch the next one.
My Grade: A
