Movie Review: The Bunnyman Massacre (2014)
Synopsis: A killer in a bunny costume murders anyone he encounters while his partner in crime, Joe, disposes of the bodies by turning them into jerky for his convenience store. When a group of women go hiking in the nearby woods, they become the Bunnyman and Joe’s latest targets and must find a way to escape before they are raped, tortured and killed by the pair.
Who's in it? The movie stars David Scott, Joshua Lang, Marshal Hilton, Heather Daley, Kate Bowen, Stefanie Estes and Julianne Dowler.
Review: One of the main reasons I am a fan of slasher movies is even the bad ones usually prove to be reasonably entertaining, even if it's in a comical way. As a result of that, when I came across The Bunnyman Massacre, I figured it would fall into that category.
Unfortunately, I was wrong. This is just a terrible film, even for the genre.
To be fair, this film is a sequel to the 2011 movie Bunnyman which I have not seen. I did take that into account when I watched this movie and dismissed a number of questions relating to why there is a killer (Lang) wearing a bunny costume and how he is related to Joe (Scott) as simply being the result of me not watching the first film. Unfortunately, even with that taken into consideration, I still found very little good about this movie.
I think the thing that really stood out for me when watching this film was how angry I was getting at the Bunnyman’s victims. Movies like this are always better when there are at least one or two victims that fight back. None of the women in this movie did that. Instead, they made it way too easy by not taking advantage of numerous opportunities to escape or grab a weapon. Heck, they couldn’t even flee into the woods without screaming for help at the top of their lungs and telling the bad guys where they were.
To give you a good example of what I mean, late in the movie, two of the victims are asked by the local sheriff (Hilton) to wait in his truck. Despite knowing what is out there hunting them, they don’t even bother to watch the woods. Instead, they just lounge around in the vehicle, not paying attention and let the Bunnyman sneak up on them. I’m sorry, but if you’re that stupid, you deserve to be killed by a maniac in a bunny costume, and it is very hard to become invested in who lives and who dies as a result of that.
Final Opinion: I had hoped this would at least be an entertaining film. Instead, it turned out to be a movie that just made me angry I decided to watch it. The bunny costume is unique but wasn't enough to make it enjoyable.
My Grade: D
