My Thoughts After Re-Watching The Blob (1958)

My wife has a photoshoot (very early) this morning and, while she was showering, getting her clothes together, etc. I amused myself by finding a movie to watch. This turned out to be The Blob, which I've seen more times than I can keep track of, though this was the first time I had watched it in its entirety in a while.

Here are some of the thoughts I had as I re-watched the classic monster film:


Casting a 28-year-old Steve McQueen as a teenager works about as well as you would expect. Don't get me wrong, I like McQueen and think he does an excellent job in the lead role. It's just I had to suspend quite a bit of believability to buy him as someone who was still in high school, along with 25-year-old Aneta Corsaut, who was closer to her character on The Andy Griffth Show, Helen Crump, than one of Ms. Crump's students.

Jim Bert's (John Benson) past could have made a movie on its own. War veteran. Hates teenagers because of an accident involving his wife. Second-in-command on the police force and seems to be a bit power hungry. I could see that being a great backstory in a thriller that featured him as the villain.

The movie could have done without the little brother, Danny (Keith Almoney). Yes, I know, I rarely like cute kids in films. He, however, was especially pointless. Was there any real point of having him as being one of the people trapped by the Blob in the diner? Did he generate any more urgency than Steve, Janet and the diner employees did without him?

OK, they captured the Blob, but what happened to the dog? The last time we see the canine is in the grocery store, when Janet flings him to the floor as she falls backwards into a stack of cans. Did he get away? Was he eaten? How did Danny react to not getting the dog he was promised?

After being off the air for seven years, The Big Bang Theory will be getting a spin-off series that isn't a prequel and will be centered around characters from the original series, albeit not the main cast members. I haven't decided if I am going to watch Stuart Fails to Save the Universe because, not unlike TBBT's Sheldon Cooper ( Jim Parsons ), I do have to consider if it will be worth the time commitment. Plus, while the plot does sound intriguing, I'm not convinced it wouldn't have been better as a movie rather than a television series. One thing the new show does do for me, however, is remind me of the missed opportunity for another TBBT spinoff that probably wasn't even considered but, if done correctly, could have been a success, at least in my opinion. Kwik Trip Kitchen Cravings Tailgater Pizza

  When my wife and I decided on pizza for dinner last night, I stopped at Kwik Trip with the intention of just buying a cheap, frozen, cheese pizza for our daughters since we already had another pizza in our freezer. However, as I was walking up to the checkout counter, this particular pizza caught my eye and, even though I wasn't crazy about spending $8.99 when I already had another option at home, I was intrigued enough to make the purchase anyway. We ended up making the pizza in the oven when I got home. After trying it, I have to say it is one of my favorites. One of the things, in particular, that really stood out for me when it came to this pizza was the toppings. The combination of sausage and cheese curds was both unique and delicious, especially since the curds were fresh enough to still squeak when we were eating them. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Episode Review: Contagious (2005)

Synopsis:  During a medical exam following a car accident, doctors determine a 4th-grader ( Jennette McCurdy ) has been sexually molested. She eventually gives SVU detectives a name and other victims come forward, but evidence emerges pointing to false accusations being made. Review: It's extremely cold outside today so I find myself sitting on the couch watching re-runs of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit with my wife. This one came on a little while ago and impacted me a lot more than expected. On the surface, there isn't really much about this episode that sets it apart from others in the series. However, Jennette McCurdy's performance really stands out. Her fear of naming the man who abused her seemed very real and I couldn't help but feel heartbroken as they tried to navigate through that fear to get the truth.
