Psych: Three Mr. Yin Twists That Would Have Been Better

As I re-watch the series Psych, I am gaining a whole new appreciation to just how brilliant the Mr. Yang storyline was. There's a great mystery about the serial killer's identity; it put Shawn Spencer's (James Roday Rodriguez) skills to the test and Ally Sheedy was a fantastic choice for the role.

The secondary story about her partner, Mr. Yin, had the potential to be equally as good but, at least in my opinion, fell short because Professor Karl Rotmessen (Peter Weller) was kind of a letdown. Don't get me wrong, Weller was solid. It's just a character that seemed in desperate need of a surprise twist involving an already established character rather than a guy who was suggested to be her father.

Here are three that I think would have been much better choices.

Mary Lightly (Jimmi Simpson)

What if Mary wasn't actually killed by Mr. Yin and instead WAS Mr. Yin? In my version of this story, the murder victim would have been Mary's twin brother, killed by his insane sibling as a decoy while Mary continued to pull the strings behind the scenes until his big reveal.

As far as his relationship with Mr. Yang, maybe she could be his equally crazy sister.

Abigail Lytar (Rachel Leigh Cook)

For the record, I think Shawn and Abigail should have ended up together. It's not that I didn't like Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson), I just think his relationship with his high school crush felt both less forced and less problematic than Shawn trying (and failing) to keep up his psychic ruse while dating a co-worker.

However, since the relationship did fail, my alternate timeline would take it one more step with Abigail being the mastermind all along - with the story starting when they were in high school and she was stood up on their date.

Her relationship with Mr. Yang? Maybe flip the script and make Abigail the student and Mr. Yang the teacher who took advantage of a vulnerable, hurt teenager.

Det. Lucinda Barry (Anne Dudek)

Remember the detective that was outed for having an affair with Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) in the very first episode of the series only to never been seen or heard from again? What if she came back as a killer?

Her motive would be a simple one, revenge. After all, she effectively lost her job over the affair (or at least had to transfer) while Lassiter stayed head detective and eventually was promoted to chief. Mr. Yin could have targeted both or just focused on Shawn because she still loved Lassiter and saw getting rid of Shawn as a way of getting in Lassiter's good graces.

As for Mr. Yang - she could have been someone Barry, who seemed to be a good detective in her own right, captured but then freed in exchange for helping her get her revenge. A bit farfetched, I know, but still a little less boring than random guy who happened to be Mr. Yang's father.
