Movie Review: The Strangers: Chapter 3 (2026)
Synopsis: After killing one of the three masked assailants who killed her boyfriend, Maya remains on the run while her sister, Debbie, arrives with armed reinforcements in search of her. Eventually, Maya learns the Scarecrow no longer wants her dead and instead wants to recruit her.
Who's in it? The movie stars Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Richard Brake, Ema Horvath and Krystal Ellsworth.
Review: Movie sequels are a tricky thing. While they are rarely as good as the original, many do at least still manage to carry on the story and still be entertaining. However, there is a limitation to that and, in the case of The Strangers: Chapter 3, the franchise reached it.
When my wife and I decided to watch this movie last night, my hope was it would bring a dramatic conclusion to Maya's (Petsch) story, especially since she inflicted her first kill and the remaining masked killers had a reason to step up their game. Instead, it ended up being a mix of dull and predictable.
One of the most entertaining things about this franchise was the mystery surrounding the people in the masks and why an entire town was willing to look the other way while they killed. By the end of the movie, the identity mystery was pretty much answered and with the veil lifted, the film lost steam. As I've said in the past, the best horror movie killers are the ones without too much of a backstory.
At first, I thought the part about Maya's sister (Rachel Shenton) coming to the rescue would add a new, entertaining element, especially since she arrived prepared and with armed backup. That ultimately failed to live up to expectations when it became clear they were just there to up the body count and not have any real impact on the plot.
The part about Maya being recruited by the Scarecrow was admittedly a surprise twist but also was something I felt killed the film's momentum. I didn't see any scenario where Maya willingly joined the person who killed her boyfriend and, later, her sister and, despite attempts to convince me otherwise, saw the ending coming from a mile away. Had they kept her life in danger, in comparison, it would have kept the ending a bit more in doubt.
Final Opinion: The first two installments were good and, had it been my choice, this would have ended at two chapters with Maya escaping, but with two of the three assailants still alive and their identities still hidden. This movie just wasn't one that should have been made.
My Grade: C-
