Thoughts From the Riverdale Episode "Nighthawks"

Synopsis: Archie (K.J. Apa) takes up a nightly vigil at his house in an effort to protect his dad (Luke Perry) from the still-at-large gunman. He begins to suspect the shooting wasn't random when he learns Geraldine Grundy (Sarah Habel) has been murdered, despite the fact there is no evidence to link the two crimes. When Pop's Diner loses business because of the shooting, Betty (Lili Reinhart) goes on a mission to keep its doors open.

My Thoughts:

1. Am I the only one who thought Fred Andrews was able to come home from the hospital awfully soon? The man was shot, nearly died and was in a coma. Shouldn't he be monitored a little bit longer? Is his health insurance that bad?

2. I get that Archie's friends are concerned about him. But, I also find it a bit ironic that, with all the advice they are giving him, none of them have stepped up and offered to help him guard his dad. You want him to get some sleep? Grab a baseball bat and stand watch for him for a few hours.

3. And, why is it, when Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines) was murdered last season, everyone in Riverdale wanted to play amateur detective yet, when Archie's dad is shot, his friends seem to have no interest in helping him figure out who did it? Granted, there's no evidence linking that shooting with Grundy's murder. But, it does seem like an awfully big coincidence. It's just apparently not a big enough coincidence for his friends to instead focus on saving a diner.

4. My personal theory is Sheriff Keller (Martin Cummins) knows who did it and is doing his best to cover it up. It would explain why he was quick to shoot Archie down when he brought up Grundy, isn't returning phone calls and seems to just want to leave things as is. Part of me thinks maybe the mayor (Robin Givens) is behind it as a way to get people to turn against the south side. Or, maybe Betty's mom (Madchen Amick). She has it out for Archie, his dad and the south side.

5. I'm starting to like Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) as Riverdale's newest villain. Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is still up there, especially since she's a bit insane. But, it's not overly difficult to gain the upper hand with her (as Betty did in this episode). Lodge, in comparison, always seems to be a step or two ahead of everyone else with his wife (Marisol Nichols) firmly in his corner and possibly just as manipulative/evil.

Final Opinion: When Fred Andrews was shot at the end of last season, I thought it was pretty obvious it was a hit orchestrated by Hiram Lodge. But, now that there are additional victims, including Grundy and Moose (Cody Kearsley), there's obviously something else going on. As I've said before, I love a good mystery. And, so far, this is a good one.

My Grade: A
