Movie Review: I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)
Synopsis: After his brother dies from a gold addiction, Jack Spade is determined to stop the man responsible, Mr. Big. Unable to do it alone, he enlists help from a former crime fighter, John Slade, and his friends to take down Big's gold distribution. Things take a sinister turn, however, when Spade's sister-in-law and former girlfriend is taken hostage by Big's gang.
Who's in it? The movie stars Keenan Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans, Kim Wayans, Bernie Casey, Isaac Hayes and Jim Brown.
Review: I took a night off from watching my daughter's community theater musical (my wife went with one of her friends so there was still someone in the audience). While at home in a quiet house, I decided to put on a movie and, because I noticed it was available, that ended up being I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.
I had seen this movie, which is a spoof of 70s exploitation films, before. However, it had been a long while and because of that, I wasn't sure if it would turn out to be anywhere near as funny as I remembered it being. As it turns out, it was funnier than I remembered.
This movie, which was both written and directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, is a great example of what the Wayans have brought and continue to bring to the entertainment industry. It doesn't hold back when it comes to racial stereotypes, playing into them for comic effect to the point the movie was goofy but also very entertaining.
There is a good mix of comedy in the film too. Some of the stuff is over-the-top, such as gold addiction replacing drug addiction or the cafe fight scene involving Ma Bell (Ja'net Dubois) I ended up watching twice because it made me laugh harder than I would have expected. Other things are a bit more subtle, whether it is the impractical oversized guns the characters carry or The Brady Bunch theme song playing in the background during Eve Plumb's scene.
What really helps this movie though is the solid and comprehensible plot. A lot of spoof movies focus too much on the spoof and forget to tell a story. This one, much like the Wayans later Scary Movie films, keeps the focus on Spade (Keenan Ivory Wayans) and his desire to rid the streets of gold and would have been reasonably entertaining even without the extras. This is especially true at the end, with multiple twists and some unexpected suspense.
Final Opinion: The movie is probably not for everyone, especially if you are easily offended. However, it is a film that is a great example of why the Wayans have lasted in Hollywood and if haven't seen it, it is worth watching.
My Grade: A
