Movie Review: Thrash (2026)

Synopsis: A category 5 hurricane causes severe flooding in the town of Annieville, South Carolina, leaving those who didn't evacuate trapped. To make matters worse, the hurricane has brought a swarm of aggressive bull sharks and a single great white shark with it.

Who's in it? The movie stars Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, Djimon Hounsou, Alyla Browne, Stacy Clausen and Dante Ubaldi.

Review: We decided not to go out last night (once again because of the weather) and instead stayed home and watched a movie. I came across Thrash on Netflix earlier in the day and, figuring it had been a while since I last watched a shark-related movie, we gave it a try. It turned out to be a good choice.

To be honest, there wasn't a whole lot about this movie I would describe as unique. Like plenty of other movies, it featured sharks in a populated area and those sharks always seemed to be hungry no matter how much they ate. However, this was one of those times when a movie didn't necessarily need to do anything different because the proven formula made it entertaining to watch.

I especially liked the two groups of people the movie focused on. The agoraphobic Dakota (Peak) and the extremely pregnant Lisa (Dynevor) made for an intriguing team, as Dakota was forced to face her fears and Lisa was doing everything to avoid giving birth in the middle of shark-infested waters. Meanwhile, siblings Dee (Browne), Ron (Clausen) and Will (Ubaldi) were trying to survive in a flooded remote cabin after their foster parents were killed, leading to a strategy that honestly shouldn't have worked.

There were a few parts of the movie that were a bit corny, including an ex machina moment that reminded me a bit too much of Jurassic Park. However, they added to the overall entertainment value while the overall film itself wasn't anywhere near as predictable as I thought it would be. There's even a nice twist at the end that potentially sets up a sequel without necessarily assuming there will be one.

If I had any complaints about the film, it would be the decision to not include a whole lot of background about some of the characters. Dakota's agoraphobia wasn't really explained for example. Was it something she always had or was it the result of her mom dying? Also, considering how terrible the foster parents were, I did wonder how Dee, Ron and Will were put into that living situation in the first place since I find it hard to believe there wouldn't have been even a basic background check. However, there was nothing that I felt detracted from the overall movie, so I was willing to give it a pass.

Final Opinion: It's your typical shark attack movie and the decision to make it one rather than trying to overcomplicate things worked in its favor.

My Grade: B+
