My Thoughts - The Traitors, Season 3

My wife and I just finished watching the third season of The Traitors. With just one more to go (at least until there's another one), here are my thoughts:

This season had a very bad group of Traitors. I mean, wow, they were partnered for what, a few hours, maybe a day, before they started backstabbing each other. Bob the Drag Queen (Christopher Caldwell) was flat out outed by fellow traitor Boston Rob (Mariano). Carolyn Wiger and Danielle Reyes painted targets on each other's backs while late recruit Britney Haynes all but confessed to being one with her reaction to Danielle being banished. It was like none of them wanted to win.

Oh, and could they have been any louder during the coffin episode? Forcing the Traitors to commit one murder (or, in this case, a murder short-list) in plain sight is an intriguing twist to the show but in this case, it really felt as though they all should have been outed. There had to be a more intelligent way to pick three names than all of them discussing it in the secret room at the same time.

That said, the Faithful weren't any better. The only way the Traitors could have made it any easier for them would be to wear a sign around their neck announcing the fact they were Traitors. Yet it was almost as though they needed their arms twisted at times because they still managed to eliminate many of their own first. This was especially true of Boston Rob. What were they waiting for? A confession?

Not to pile on the Traitors but Danielle made the wrong pick with Britney. Not that I couldn't see where she was coming from with that pick. After being paired with Rob and Carolyn, she wanted someone she could both trust and I think control. However, it would have made more sense for her to recruit Dylan Efron. Britney clearly wasn't going to vote against her either way. Dylan would have ensured she had the three votes she needed to control the table.

I was glad to see the show changed the rules to correct a glaring problem. As I pointed out, Kate Chastain stood no chance of winning last season because it was clear there was still a Traitor and the remaining players were going to continue voting until they caught her. That was fixed this season, both with the last banished player(s) not revealing their status and with no murder being committed the night before, keeping some level of doubt.

However, I would have used the new "Seer" rule to keep murder on the table. Simply put, in my version, the player chosen as the Seer would have the ability to "kill" the player they invite to dinner. This means a Faithful with the power could kill a revealed Traitor or a Traitor with the power could kill a Faithful and claim they were a Traitor. You could even have Faithful on Faithful murder if the Seer wanted to do that, either because they believed someone was a bad Faithful or they just wanted more money for themselves.

Final Opinion: Of the three seasons I've watched of this show, this is the one I've liked the least. There were some attempts to spice things up, both with three late additions and making it harder for the contestants at the end but none of it was enough to overcome a weak team of Traitors that worked harder to eliminate each other than they did trying to win the game.

My Grade: C
