More Television Characters That Should Have Had Spin-offs

There are times when I think I missed my calling and should have been involved in television. For one, I think I'd do a better job writing some of the episodes I've seen. However, I also am a person who sees missed opportunities when it comes to television series spin-offs.

I've listed some in the past (you can read that here). Here are a few more I think would have been great.

Jenny - Doctor Who

To be honest, I'm a little surprised Jenny (Georgia Moffett) never appeared in more than one episode of the series because the Doctor's "daughter," created using his DNA was such an intriguing character. In a way, she was a reboot of the Doctor, possessing his Time Lord powers but without the hundreds of years of experience using them. A spin-off series featuring her would have been fun to watch, even if it was just a limited series.

Rachel Greene - Friends

This would, of course, take place in an alternate universe where Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) didn't give up her dream job in Paris to be with Ross (David Schwimmer) in the final episode of the series.

The intriguing thing about Rachel is, unlike any of other friends, including Joey (Matt LeBlanc), who did get a spin-off, Rachel had never been completely on her own before. It would have given us the opportunity to see her without the safety net her friends provided her with while she started over as a single mom in a whole other country.

The Men of Letters - Supernatural

There's no guarantee this would have worked because, to date, no Supernatural spin-off has survived. However, I think this would have been worth the attempt, both because it would be about a group of monster hunters that live in Europe and because it would have been a series about hunters who were exact opposite of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) in terms of both funding and ethics.

Crowley - Supernatural

Speaking of Supernatural, Mark Sheppard's Crowley would have been a great subject for a spin-off. For me, it would have been something best launched earlier in the series, when he was serving as King of Hell. Each episode could have been a mix of drama and comedy as new souls were delivered in need of punishment and his minions plotted against him, setting up crossover episodes.

Barney Fife, The Andy Griffith Show

While The Andy Griffith Show lasted for some time after Don Knotts left the series to pursue a movie career and his character, Fife, was written off as a result, the series arguably wasn't as good without him. That said, one of the true tragedies was we never got to see a Fife spin-off.

I personally would have loved to see more of Barney as he attempted to find his footing as part of the Raleigh police force, without Andy (Andy Griffith) there to bail him out. He could have been a funny, bumbling detective who somehow always got his man, even if it was by accident.
