Movie Review: A Christmas Horror Story (2015)

Synopsis: As Christmas approaches and a radio station deejay plays holiday music, a group of documentary students are terrorized at a haunted boarding school, a child is replaced by a changeling, a family is stalked by Krampus and Santa is forced to hunt and kill his elves after they are turned into zombies.

Who's in it? The movie stars William Shatner, George Buza, Amy Forsyth, Michelle Nolden and Rob Archer.

Review: I came across this movie on Netflix several years ago and remembered enjoying it. So, when I had an opportunity to watch it again, I decided to do so. It was as good as I recalled.

The movie isn't as quite as scary as I would prefer, mostly because the monsters do look a bit fake. However, even without the scares, it's still an entertaining film.

One thing that intrigued me was the way the four, completely separate, stories were happening at the same time without any apparent connection other than the deejay (Shatner) playing the music. It made me wonder if they would stay seemingly disconnected stories or if the film would find a way to connect them.

In either case, the four stories proved to be fun to watch. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised when the stories turned out not to be as predictable as I thought they would be. The one about the college students in the haunted school and the story about Santa (Buza) fighting zombie elves had endings I can honestly say I didn't see coming (though the Santa one probably shouldn't have surprised me the way it did). This mystery did keep me much more interested than I thought I would be.

Another thing I found I liked about this movie was the way it didn't try to cheapen things by having excessive blood and gore or gratuitous nudity. The gore was kept to a realistic necessity (most of it was the result of Santa and the zombie elves). There is also only one, relatively short (and, as the movie later reveals, necessary), sex scene. that takes place with the participants pretty much fully clothed. Considering this is something that tends to be a pet peeve of mine when it comes to this film genre, I did appreciate the moderation.

Final Opinion: As I said, it's not overly scary. However, the movie still proved to be much more entertaining than I thought it would be and is a film I would recommend as a result.

My Grade: B
