Movie Review: Borderline (2025)
Synopsis: In 1990s Los Angeles, an obsessed fan, Paul, attempts to enter the home of pop superstar and actress Sofia Minor and ends up stabbing her bodyguard, Bell, before calling the police on himself. Six months later, just as Bell has recovered from his injuries and is about to return to work, Paul escapes and, with the help of his friends, Penny and J. H., carries out a plan that he hopes will result in Sofia marrying him.
Who's in it? The movie stars Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson, Eric Dane, Jimmie Fails and Alba Baptista.
Review: My wife and I have been re-watching past episodes of Project Runway and, as a result of that, it had been a while since we last watched a movie together. We had some time this evening and, since I've liked Samara Weaving in other films, decided to give Borderline a try. I didn't know what to think of it at first, but I think it ended up being a pleasant surprise.
I think the thing that really makes this movie work is Paul (Nicholson). There is just so much unpredictability as far as he is concerned. One moment, he is pleasantly funny and quirky then, out of the blue, he commits an act of violence that even he can't seem to explain. This made it hard to tell what he'd do next.
In fact, this has probably been said before about Nicholson, but there were times when he reminded me a lot of his dad, Jack, mostly because Paul seemed so much like a character the elder Nicholson would have played.
The other thing I really liked about this movie is the overall near perfect blend of thriller and comedy. The premise seems so straightforward, yet there are so many bizarre yet fun twists throughout, whether it is the wannabe actor moonlighting as a police officer (Matthew Del Bel Belluz) or the fight between Sofia (Weaving) and Penny (Baptista) that turns into a fantastic Celine Dion duet.
The wedding scene at the end is a great example of this too. I won't go into too many details to avoid spoilers, but it was something that was so bizarre, I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to laugh because it was, once again, one of those situations that seemed funny at first but could also turn very ugly very fast depending on how things played out. In other words, it kept us guessing until the very end.
Final Opinion: This is more of a dark comedy than a thriller, but it proved to be an entertaining choice. It's worth taking the time to watch.
My Grade: A
