Thoughts from the Green Bay Packers Versus the New Orleans Saints (12/23/2024)

Here are some of my thoughts from the Green Bay Packers' 34-0 victory over the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field last night:

Green Bay Packers fans received an early Christmas gift. The Packers are in the playoffs with two games to go. While the division title is off the table, they still have an opportunity to improve their seeding spot or, depending on the outcome of their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings, may be able to rest players in the final week of the regular season.

This was as dominating of a performance as you could ask for. Yes, the Saints have been plagued by injuries and are a shell of the team they were at the start of the season. However, pitching the NFL's first shutout of the season isn't something that should be overlooked, especially against a team that took the Washington Commanders down to the wire just a week ago. Green Bay's defense, after all, was missing key personnel too.

And the best part of that (for Packers fans at least) is Green Bay still looks like it has areas it can improve upon. The offense, for example, has a habit of starting out strong but fading a bit after the half. If Matt LaFleur can get a full game from Jordan Love and company, watch out.

Josh Jacobs' stiff arm is a thing of beauty. Even my wife, who isn't as big a football fan as I am, noticed him putting defenders on the ground with it.

I was also impressed with the other running backs. Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks received more of a workload this week, giving Jacobs a chance to rest once the team had a large enough lead. I didn't see any real drop off in the rushing stats with the pair combining for 75 yards and a 6.8-yards-per-carry average.

Oh, and how about Malik Willis. The backup only had an opportunity to play for one drive (not counting the kneel downs) and made the most of it, leading the team to one more touchdown to ensure the game was out of reach. He was one heck of a trade.

Christian Watson is once again hurt though. He's one of those players that shows tons of potential but can never seem to stay on the field. The Packers have a few of those, I think, including Luke Musgrave (who was used sparingly last night after finally returning) and Jaire Alexander (who was a late scratch again). It speaks volumes to the depth this team has and a reminder of how much better they could be as well.
