Thoughts From the Green Bay Packers Versus the Indianapolis Colts
Some thoughts from today's 16-10 Green Bay Packers' win over the Indianapolis Colts at Lambeau Field.
Maybe the Packers' season isn't over with after week 1 after all. The Packers dodged a bullet with Jordan Love, who hopefully will be back from a knee injury by week 4, if not next week. However, they couldn't afford to go winless without him and this was a big team victory as a result.
The game plan was a good one. The Colts were starting to shut down the run-heavy offense by the second half but with Malik Willis being thrust into a starting role when he wasn't even with the team in preseason, it was the right decision. Willis only had to throw 14 times and was able to play to his strengths. I would assume they will depend on his arm a bit more if he's forced to play next week though.
Speaking of the run game. That was as dominant of a performance as you could expect to see in the first half. Imagine how dangerous that group of running backs will be when defenses need to worry about Love throwing the ball again.
I did like what I saw in Willis. I didn't know anything about him until the Packers traded a seventh-round pick to acquire him from the Tennessee Titans, but I can understand why the Packers' personnel staff preferred him over the two quarterbacks they drafted in 2023 and 2024. At minimum, his ability to run with the ball is already intriguing. If Matt LaFleur and Tom Clements can improve his passing skills, he could be dangerous.
I'm also starting to like what I'm seeing from the defense. Last season, the Packers had just nine interceptions in 17 games. They have five in the first two of this season and should have had a sixth one from linebacker Quay Walker. That's going to make a difference if they keep that up.
The kicking game is still concerning. Brayden Narveson has had two field goal misses in two games. Both of them proved to be game changing. The miss against Philadelphia last week forced the Hail Mary effort that injured Love. The miss this week kept the Colts in the game until the very end. It'll be interesting to see if the Packers remain patient with the rookie's 75 percent overall completion rate and 50 percent completion rate from beyond 40 yards.
