Movie Review: His & Hers (2024)
Synopsis: Lawyers Dana and Mark are happily married and celebrating their seventh anniversary when their respective firms assign them to litigate a divorce between a celebrity reality television couple, Brett and Tabby Noble. While they agree to work together to settle things quickly and as amicably as possible, their clients' refusal to compromise threatens to damage their own marriage.
Who's in it? The movie stars Lacey Chabert, Brennan Elliott, Stephanie Bennett, Clayton James and Mariesa Crouse.
Review: As I've mentioned before, my wife and I are big fans of Lacey Chabert Hallmark movies and when I saw this new one was coming out, I was sure to record it. We watched it this evening and it unfortunately missed the mark for us.
The premise isn't a bad one, especially since there is a bit of a mystery surrounding Gwen (Crouse) the woman Brett (James) is supposedly cheating with and Tabby's (Bennett) former best friend and assistant and what secret she was hiding. However, the execution did leave a little something to be desired.
The biggest complaint my wife and I both had related to the relationship between Dana (Lacey) and Mark (Elliott). As many projects as the two actors have worked on together, you would think the chemistry would be more believable. Instead, it both seemed forced and there were plenty of times when their over-the-top love for each other was a bit nauseating. I think the best way I could describe it is it felt like I was watching a television sitcom where two people who don't like each other are trying to pretend they are a couple.
On top of it, the movie never really challenges that relationship. Every time they had a disagreement, they would solve it literally a scene or two later. Heck, even accidentally reading each other's background checks and learning they weren't fully truthful didn't create a rift that lasted more than a few seconds. It was as though the writers were afraid to commit to the major point of the plot.
The funny part is, even though they were supposed to be the antagonists, I actually kind of liked Brett and Tabby better. I both thought the characters were entertaining and I believed the pair as a couple. Unfortunately, that also resulted in me correctly guessing the real story behind their divorce when I realized it seemed a little too contrived.
Final Opinion: I didn't hate the movie and as I said, I thought Brett and Tabby were entertaining. However, I was expecting a lot more from the plot than the film gave. The writers played it a bit too safe as far as the main characters were concerned and the film fell short of expectations as a result, being average at best.
My Grade: C
