Why a Packers/Aaron Rodgers Reunion Makes Sense

Look, I'm not going to pretend it is even remotely likely to happen. However, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers still considering another season of football at the age of 42 there are reasons why a return to the Green Bay Packers would make sense for the former MVP passer.

Timing is everything and, when the Packers decided to part ways with Rodgers following the 2022 season, the time was right. Rodgers was still playing at a high level, but Jordan Love was ready to take the reins and there was clear disconnect between the quarterback and the front office.

Now, the timing is again right, with Love firmly entrenched as the starter but the team in need of a reliable backup quarterback after losing Malik Willis to free agency. It would be an arrangement that would benefit both sides.

For the Packers, they would be getting a quarterback who, while no longer in his prime, has shown he can still play at a high enough level to win games. He is also familiar with Coach Matt LaFleur's offense, having taken the team to the NFC title game twice and winning his fourth MVP title while playing for LaFleur.

The other thing Rodgers would bring is a veteran who has shown a willingness to be a mentor. This would be something that would help Love, who has shown potential but hasn't been able to take that next step (albeit not always through fault of his own). It would also be something that could potentially help with developing a longer-term answer at the QB2 role.

For Rodgers, it would be an opportunity to finish his career where he started and with a team that still has Super Bowl aspirations versus a return to a Pittsburgh Steelers team that is further away, even with Mike McCarthy as the new head coach.

Plus, while a backup role may not be as glamorous, it would save wear and tear on his aging body while still giving him the likely opportunity to play in some games.

It's something that makes sense, at least on paper. It's just too bad that reunion is very unlikely to happen.
