Movie Review: Flight of the Living Dead (2007)

Synopsis: A group of scientists smuggle a woman infected with a reanimating virus onboard a plane from Los Angeles to Paris. Strong turbulence results in her being freed and she soon begins spreading the virus, turning passengers and crew into zombies.

Who's in it? The movie stars David Chisum, Kristen Kerr, Richard Tyson, Kevin J. O'Connor and Erick Avari.

Review: I was in the mood for a movie last night and after some searching, came across Flight of the Living Dead on Amazon Prime Video. It had been a while since my wife and I watched a zombie movie so; after scrolling through a few more options, we decided to give it a try.

I didn't have a whole lot of expectations for this film. This was both because of the plot and because I didn't recognize any of the actors or actresses. However, after seeing the movie, I do have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

The plot itself requires some suspension of disbelief and not asking too many questions. For example, I found it hard to believe the team of scientists could smuggle such a dangerous and illegal experiment onboard a passenger jet and even wondered why they would choose a passenger jet in the first place rather than a cargo plane or private plane. My wife, meanwhile, questioned why they would allow air travel when there was such a dangerous storm.

The movie also spends a bit too much time on subplots that have zero real bearing on the plot. That whole love triangle thing involving a bunch of college-aged friends, for example, had a bit too much emphasis for something that had zero payout. Meanwhile, other characters, like the nun sitting by them (Claudia Katz Minnick) had just as much of a role in the end but got no lines.

Once the movie gets going, however, it more than makes up for some of the flaws. At first, it seemed as though containing the spread of the virus was as simple as re-locking the cargo hold but that proved not to be the case and, as zombies began tearing through the floor of the jet and smashing through restroom walls and mirrors, the movie became much more exciting than I expected it to be.

There was also the added threat of the United States government, knowing about the virus and unable to make contact with the plane, being ready to blow up the craft to save lives. While this did become a bit messy toward the end with a sudden new parameter involving survivors suddenly coming into play, it still added a little additional suspense and led to an ending that was both campy but also a bit creepy (at least in my wife's opinion).

Final Opinion: The movie doesn't sound like much and is far from perfect. However, it is an entertaining film, and I would recommend it if you're looking for a zombie movie to watch.

My Grade: B
