Movie Review: Bring It On: Cheer or Die (2022)

Synopsis: Roughly 20 years after a fatal accident at a cheer competition, the Diablos are banned from performing any stunt work by their high school principal. With regionals coming up, the team captains decide to disobey and secretly practice stunts at the abandoned high school, now used for storage. However, they soon discover their lives are in danger from a murderer wearing the school's mascot costume.

Who's in it? The movie stars Kerri Medders, Alten Wilmot, Sierra Holder, Alexandra Beaton and Missi Pyle.

Review: I was in the mood for a slasher flick last night and had seen previews for this film before. I ended up giving it a shot and it turned out to be an OK albeit not overly special choice.

I did find I liked the overall mystery about who was stalking the cheerleaders and why. I assumed it had something to do with the fatal accident (which wasn't really an accident) but the length of time between the cheerleader death and this squad complicated that theory.

This, in turn, allowed the movie to have quite a few potential suspects ranging from any of the cheerleaders who happened to leave the gymnasium for a bathroom break to the high school principal (Pyle) and a couple guys who seemed to be somewhat obsessed with the team's co-captain, Abby (Medders). It turns out I was partially right with my guess but not in the way I was expecting.

My only real complaint about the movie is I do feel like some of the characters could have used a bit more fleshing out. I don't normally expect slasher movies to spend a whole lot of time on the victims' backstories but there just weren't enough personality differences between the characters to make them overly unique from each other. In fact, there were a few times when I was having a hard time of keeping track of who was who.

Final Opinion: As I said, there isn't anything I would consider overly special about this film but it was still an OK slasher movie. At minimum, it was fun to watch which in itself makes it worth a try.

My Grade: B-
