Movie Review: Encanto (2021)

Synopsis: Mirabel, a Columbian teenager, is the only person in her family that doesn't possess a magical gift, making her somewhat of an outcast. When their magical family home begins showing cracks and some of her family members begin losing their powers, Mirabel is blamed. However, she might be the only person who can save the day.

Who's in it? The animated movie uses voices from Stephanie Beatriz, Maria Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Jessica Darrow and Wilmer Valderrama.

Review: My oldest daughter saw this at the movie theater with a friend and liked it so much, she insisted on watching it with us when it came to Disney Plus. After seeing it, I don't know if I would say it was my favorite Disney movie but will admit the film was better than I was expecting.

I think the thing I liked most about this film is it wasn't as predictable as many other animated movies are. Part of this was the mystery about why Mirabel (Beatriz) was the one person who didn't have powers but a bigger part of it was why her family's powers were starting to fade as well. Normally, you would expect some sort of villain to be behind it but, since this movie didn't have a villain, it was a lot less obvious.

I will also admit, there was part of me wondering just how the movie would end. On one hand, the family losing their magical powers would be bad for both them and their village but, on the other hand, since some of the family members weren't necessarily happy because of their gifts, an ending that had them become normal could also be considered a "happy" ending.

My biggest complaint about this movie is I feel like it had too many songs. I actually feel like this movie would have been better had it not been a musical and, instead, had used that time to do a little more plot or character development. Of course, had it not been for the songs, the film probably would have been about thirty minutes shorter too.

Final Opinion: Again, it wasn't my favorite Disney film, mostly because I am getting burned out on animated musicals. However, the movie did have some good things going for it and, because of that, I would still recommend taking the time to watch it.

My Grade: B
