Movie Review: The Recall (2017)
Synopsis: As a group of friends prepare to party at a remote cabin, the Earth is invaded by aliens looking to abduct humans by the thousands. Their only hope is a former astronaut turned recluse who has encountered the aliens before.
Who's in it? The movie stars Wesley Snipes, RJ Mitte, Laura Bilgeri, Hannah Rose May and Niko Pepaj.
Review: My wife and I weren't able to do a whole heck of a lot over our anniversary weekend, mostly because everything is closed because of COVID-19. So, looking for an escape from the horror movie going on outside, we opted for an alien invasion film. Overall, this turned out to be better than I was expecting.
Actually, I thought the overall premise was pretty darn good. The aliens weren't just invading and abducting people, they arrived with the purpose of performing experiments on and upgrading humans (for motivations unknown). If nothing else, it was somewhat unique and a little intriguing.
The movie also managed to have quite a bit more suspense than I was expecting it to have. Normally, films like this tend to get a little dull after a while. This one kept things at a relatively fast pace and made me feel like the characters's lives could be threatened at any second.
Unfortunately, the movie wasn't without flaws. For one, I think it would have been considerably better had the film not given so much background information on the aliens. Instead, I would have much rather seen it only from the friends' perspective with a little more uncertainty about which information they were getting was correct.
Also, as hard as I tried, other than maybe Snipes' character, I had hard time liking anyone in this movie. Films like this are better if you actually want people to escape the aliens. But, I honestly had a hard time caring, especially since every single one of them seemed to go out of their way to be kind of a jerk at some point in the film. In fact, if it weren't for the somewhat unique plot, I probably wouldn't have even finished the movie because of this.
Final Opinion: It could use more-likable characters and maybe a bit less information to make it a little more scary. But, overall, I thought this was a fairly decent alien invasion film and I would recommend it.
My Grade: B
